"Renoir Dancers" inspired by the Renoir "Dance in the country"
Dorit Levinstein
“For me, Renoir symbolizes the good, pleasureful life, focusing on happy occasions and positive atmosphere. I get inspired by the people in my world. While hanging out at coffee shops, or watching young couples dance, I feel a powerful need to create. When I am in my studio, I remember the whole scene – it is as if I can hear the music playing, the people laughing and feel the energy around me. Something makes me miss that romantic era, the mystery, the soft-slow pace of things. When sculpting ‘The Dancers’ I wanted to dance with them, to capture the movement’s ecstasy. I imagined them moving in circles, hence the spiral shape of the woman’s dress, and as a woman, I like to think that the man is steady, holding the woman firmly and giving her confidence while they dance.”
Her spare, elegant sculptures seem to giggle with delight as if tickled, then stretch out with an exquisite elasticity to form their position in space. The statues derive their volume from a continuous virtuosic line alluding to human figures, animals, flowers, and ordinary domestic objects.

"Flutist" inspired by the Manet " Fifer"
Dorit Levinstein
“This was painted with the influence of Velasquez and Spanish painting, expressing the shift between Realism to Impressionism. What I’ve found most fascinating is the entire body movement in music; you can actually feel and imagine the music through the boy’s body vigilance. I tried to sculpt his body language that conveys the joy of playing and his great concentration which allows me to really ”hear” the sounds he make.” Dorit Levinstein Torn between painting and sculpture, Levinstein longed for a synthesis between the two, a personal language that would bridge the contradictory aspects of her personality.

"Frida" inspired by the Frida Kahlo " Self portrait with monkey"
Dorit Levinstein
“Long before I read her moving biography, I was curious about the mustache painted in every portrait of this beautiful woman, who exposed herself with such courage. Her approach to life made her seem more beautiful to me than she really was. I tried to sculpt it to look like her as much as I could, and during the work I was surprised and moved to see the shadow created on the wall resembled her even more. I imagined it was her spirit who came to accompany me and remind me that she was an integral part of the portrait.”
My first experiments with bronze led me to fairly academic figurative notions. As I gradually turned to abstract art and absorbed various influences from modernist sculptors, I focused on the development of volume, in which the work reveals a contrapuntal relationship between the shape and its hollow core.

"Matisse Dancers" inspired by the Matisse "Dance"
Dorit Levinstein
“Looking at original painting you can see five female characters, naked, ecstatically dancing in a circle. The figures are flat and schematic, bordered by contour lines and contrasting the cold blue-green space surrounding them. I feel the painting reflects Matisse’s attraction to primitive art in nature. The closed circle sends a message of emotional hedonism, a metaphorical image of liberation of body and soul from cultural and social conventions. But above all, I was drawn to the connection between the characters, the friendship they share, a value I hold very dear to my heart and believe it holds the key to true happiness.” We are invited to step into her universe of forms, figures, and colors...

"Motherhood" inspired by the Klimt "Mother and child"
Dorit Levinstein
“I chose to sculpt this particular part of the original work because of the great love, connection and tenderness I felt coming from it. It feels to me that the mother and child can be an individual, stand-alone unit no matter if they are a part of something, all they need is each other!”
The wire sculpture is only the initial stage of the whole sculpting process. When the basic shape is ready, volume and thickness are added to the figure and revisions are made. At this stage of elaboration, I ask myself whether I can become friendly with this newly emerging creature. After being cast in bronze, the figure is ready for its final metamorphosis. The third step, in which the sculpture is painted, is actually the fun part of the process.

"Sunflowers" inspired by the Picasso "Vase de fleurs"
Dorit Levinstein
Sunflowers go through an interesting life-cycle with fascinating stages. While working on this piecI tried different arrangements for the flowers and each one created a different sculpture every time. The final piece presents three stages of blossom: youth, adulthood and maturity; whilet he youth drop their heads in wilting, the adult headsare held high and proud.”
I work intuitively in my studio "drawing" three-dimensional figures in space. Intense concentration is required, like a stage performer who gathers all his energy for performing a single show. In a way, it's like a choreography of matter. All the information and details needed must be included in one continuous, flowing line.

"Picasso dove" inspired the Picasso "Dove of Peace"
Dorit Levinstein
"I was charmed by Picasso's typical delicate way of expressing everything with breezy and minimalistic lines. To me, Picasso is the Mozart of painting, an eternal child that his object is perceived as a toy. I truly beleive that we become more and more bling to things we see every day, no matter how amazing they are; Seeing things through the eyes of a child Is not to take anything for granted, and there is no better way to explore and learn new things in our life. "Venus" inspired by the Botticelli "Birth of Venus"
Dorit Levinstein
“The eternal beauty queen of all time, born from the seashell which symbolizes eternity. Her naked body and classic pose nobly conceal the duality of being seductive and bold, yet modest and shy, and create a conflicted character. This red-haired Venus, with her white robe is embedded so deeply in our culture that it took me a while to have the courage to paint her in different colors than Botticelli’s famous painting.”
But however enjoyable it may be, a crucial dialogue is also being expressed between the language of the sculpture and that of painting. The colorful rhythmic patterns that are painted on the three- dimensional surface camouflage and break up the shape of the structure.

"An animal mounted on a wall celebrates man's triumph over nature. But it is truly a victory mounting the victim on the wall? Can we decorate our homes with such accomplishments even if life was sacrificed along the way? This is a work close to my own heart: it reminds me that my mounted animal lives on. I was created in response to those who must mount a stuffed deer head on their wall, a barbarian tradition, in my view, of killing for the sake of killing of innocent animals"

This piece is part of a Sculpture Garden in Holon where each work is based on a children's story. My work is a tribute to Lea Goldberg's "Where is Pluto?" - the story of a dog who seeks more excitement in his daily life. The fish reminds Pluto that he is not suited to the underwater world. My sculpture, Spiral Fish, tracks the movement of the fish's volume on the surface of the water.
